Favour works because neighbours trust each other. These guidelines explain how to trade well and stay safe. They're part of our Terms of Use.
In an emergency, call 000. If you or someone you know is going through a hard time, Lifeline is there 24/7 on 13 11 14.
Meeting in person safely
- Meet somewhere public for a first trade: a café, library, park or the front of a shop, in daylight where you can.
- Tell a friend where you're going, who you're meeting and when you'll be back.
- Keep your chat in Favour so there's a record. Be wary of anyone who pushes to move to another app straight away.
- If the job is at a home, consider having someone else there, keep your phone charged, and only share your exact address once you're comfortable.
- Check before you go. Look at their profile, ratings and reviews. New members are welcome; just take a little extra care.
- Trust your instincts. You can leave or cancel at any time, for any reason. Cancelling a trade before it's done returns held credits.
- Never share bank details, passwords or ID documents, and never pay cash on the side.
- Check items before you take them, and follow safety advice for things like car seats, helmets, electrical items and food (label allergens).
Trade well
- Be honest in titles, descriptions and photos. Say what's included, and mention anything that's worn, broken or limited.
- Agree the details in the chat: what, when, where and how long, before you meet.
- Show up, or let the other person know early if plans change.
- Confirm when it's done so the held credits are released, and rate the person fairly.
- If something goes wrong, talk to them first. If you can't sort it out, raise a dispute from the chat before the held credits go back.
Volunteering with a group
- Verified groups show a badge. We've checked they exist, but use the same care you would with anyone you meet.
- Volunteers: before the day, ask the group in the chat what the work involves, what to bring, and who'll be in charge. If something feels unsafe on the day, you can say no and leave.
- Groups: give volunteers a clear brief, a contact on the day, and any safety gear or training needed. You're responsible for insurance and for any checks the activity needs, such as Working with Children Checks.
- Confirm promptly when the work is done, so volunteers are paid. Groups can confirm everyone at once from Activity.
Be a good neighbour
- Be kind and respectful, even when you say no.
- No harassment, bullying, hate speech, threats or unwanted romantic or sexual advances.
- Respect privacy: don't share other people's personal details, chats or photos without permission.
- One account per person, using your own name and photo.
Not allowed on Favour
Some work needs training, licences, insurance or checks that a neighbourly swap can't provide, so it isn't allowed here, even if you're qualified:
- Childcare and babysitting, and aged or disability care.
- Driving other people, or passenger transport.
- Electrical, plumbing, gas or structural building work.
- Roof work, tree removal, scaffolding and vehicle repair.
- Health, medical, allied health or mental health advice or treatment.
- Financial, legal or tax advice.
- Tattoos, piercing and cosmetic injectables.
- Food made and sold at scale (home-cooked food shared between neighbours is fine).
And never:
- Anything illegal, or anything sexual. Companionship listings are for things like a walk, a chat or a coffee.
- Weapons, ammunition, drugs or drug equipment, alcohol, tobacco and vapes, or prescription medicines.
- Live animals. (Pet sitting and dog walking are welcome.)
- Stolen, counterfeit, recalled or unsafe goods.
- Requests for money, loans or credits for cash. Credits can't be bought or sold.
- Spam, scams, advertising for businesses, or posts that aren't a real offer or need.
If something isn't right
- Report a listing, profile or chat using “Report” on that screen. Our team reviews every report, and reports about safety are looked at first. The other person isn't told who reported them.
- Block someone to stop them seeing your listings, messaging you or sending you requests.
- We may remove content, hold posts for review, or suspend accounts that break these guidelines. Serious or repeated breaches mean you can't use Favour.
